What a consultant can and can’t do

A consultant can:

  • Compare programmes, fees and specialisations across universities
  • Check your eligibility and documents
  • Help with the application, your ABC ID and DEB-ID
  • Explain fee and instalment options, in writing
  • Follow up until the university confirms your enrolment

A consultant can’t:

  • Admit you — the university makes the admission
  • Award a degree — only the university can
  • Offer a university programme in its own name — UGC does not allow franchising
  • Conduct the university's exams for it
  • Guarantee a job, a salary hike or a result

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an admission consultant for an online or distance MBA?

No. You can apply directly on the university's website. A consultant helps you compare programmes and fees, check eligibility and complete the paperwork. Whichever route you take, the admission is made by the university, so check the programme on deb.ugc.ac.in for your admission session.

Are admission consultants legal in India?

Counselling and admission help are not prohibited, and there is no UGC licence for consultants. What UGC prohibits is franchising: a university cannot let a company or centre offer its distance or online programme in that company's own name. The programme must be the university's, the admission is made by the university, and the degree is awarded by the university.

Do admission consultants charge a fee?

Most advertise free counselling. Ask upfront whether there is any charge beyond the programme fee, compare the total with the fee the university publishes on its website, and get the breakdown in writing.

Can a consultant guarantee admission or a job?

No. Admission is decided by the university against its eligibility rules, and no one can guarantee a job or a salary. Treat any such guarantee as a red flag.

How do I check that a consultant is genuine?

Look for a registered company or institute with a physical address and a track record. Check that the programme on offer is on UGC-DEB's list for your session, that the fee matches the university's published fee, and that you receive an enrolment number from the university after admission.

What do IICT and IIPM offer?

IICT Business School (Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade, Lucknow) and IIPM (Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing, Lucknow) are autonomous, non-UGC institutions operating legally since 1997 and 1998 respectively. Each awards its own Corporate MBA (MBA Diploma) and facilitates MBA degree admission with Subharti University and Amity University, where the degree is awarded by the university. Counselling is free.
